Breast Augmentation

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation – also known as augmentation mammaplasty – is a surgical procedure that restores breast tissue and/or fulfills a desire for fuller breasts using implants. Breast augmentation can:

  • Enlarge breasts that are naturally small.
  • Provide symmetry and desired proportions for patients dissatisfied with their breast size and/or shape.
  • Restore breast tissue that has been lost, due to past pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
  • Enhance a patient’s self-image and confidence.

On its own, this procedure cannot correct severely drooping breasts. Patients with severe sagging may need to have mastopexy (breast lift surgery) in conjunction with augmentation. In many cases, these procedures can be performed at the same time.

At Four Peaks Plastic Surgery, Dr. Faibisoff uses FDA-approved silicone shell/saline breast implants. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Who needs augmentation mammaplasty?

Breast augmentation is an elective procedure that may be done to help you achieve the look you have always wanted for yourself. If you are in good health, have fully developed breasts, realistic expectations, and are dissatisfied with your breast size or shape, then augmentation mammaplasty may be right for you. The decision to have breast implants should always be your choice. Don’t let anyone else pressure you into having this procedure.

How Breast Augmentation Is Performed

After you have gone through the consultation process with Dr. Faibisoff, your surgery may be scheduled at Mountain Vista Medical Center (in East Mesa). The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

There are several different areas where the incisions may be placed for your surgery. An inframammary incision is one type of incision; this incision is just below the breast, hidden by the breast’s natural curve. A transaxillary incision is located on the armpit. A periareolar incision is made around the lower half of the areola. Incision placement is determined by a number of factors, including your anatomy, type of implant, and more. Dr. Faibisoff will go over your incision and implant options with you during your initial consultation.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon inserts the implant. The implant may be inserted over or beneath the pectoral muscle. At Four Peaks Plastic Surgery, Dr. Faibisoff uses FDA-approved silicone shell, saline-filled breast implants. These implants are approved for use in women ages 18 and older. In some cases, they may be more affordable than silicone implants; plus, patients who have saline implants do not have to undergo regular MRI breast examinations.

Once the implants have been inserted, Dr. Faibisoff closes up the incision with sutures, and the procedure is complete. Over time, incision lines will fade, and the breasts will take on their new, natural appearance.

What should I do to prepare for augmentation mammaplasty?

The medical staff at Four Peaks Plastic Surgery will provide you with all the information you need to prepare for your augmentation mammaplasty. As with most any cosmetic surgery, it’s important to stop smoking at least several weeks before the procedure and to avoid non-prescribed herbal medicines, supplements, and anti-inflammatory drugs. You should also get a baseline mammogram prior to your procedure. This mammogram is important because it provides a pre-op reference point for future mammograms. Dr. Faibisoff will give you detailed information about preparing for your breast augmentation procedure during the pre-op appointment. What is the recovery process like?

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery takes at least 24 to 48 hours. Following this immediate recovery period, you will likely have some soreness and swelling for several weeks. Your surgical care team at Four Peaks Plastic Surgery will provide you with detailed information about the recovery process.

How long will the results last?

Breast augmentation results can last for many years when you take care of your implants and your body. Eventually, natural aging and sagging may affect the shape of your breasts. Some women choose to have a breast lift procedure to restore their youthful appearance.
