What is liposuction?
Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty) is a surgical procedure during which fatty deposits are “suctioned” out of the body, creating a slim and fit body contour. Many patients undergo liposuction in Mesa, AZ at Four Peaks Plastic Surgery. This procedure is oftentimes performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as breast reduction and abdominoplasty.
Dr. Burt Faibisoff, a board-certified plastic surgeon with special training in liposuction and other procedures, performs a full range of cosmetic surgeries. Many procedures, like lipoplasty, are performed at the same time, reducing time spent under anesthesia. Also, patients who have liposuction in conjunction with another procedure only have to go through the procedure-and-recovery process once.
What areas can liposuction treat?
Liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss. Rather, this cosmetic procedure is used to help patients get rid of fatty deposits that diet and exercise programs cannot resolve. At Four Peaks Plastic Surgery in Mesa, AZ, liposuction is used to remove fat from many areas of the body, including:
- Inner Knee
Liposuction may also be used to treat areas of the body not on this list. To learn more, contact Four Peaks Plastic Surgery at 480-257-2670 for more information.
Who needs liposuction?
Liposuction is an elective cosmetic procedure, which means that it is not medically necessary. The decision to have liposuction is a personal one, and no one else should be allowed to pressure you into having the procedure.
That being said, many patients in Mesa choose liposuction through Four Peaks Plastic Surgery in order to attain their own body image goals. You may be a candidate for liposuction if you meet the following criteria:
- You are within 30 percent of your ideal weight.
- You have good muscle tone and firm, elastic skin.
- You are in good health, and do not have any life-threatening illnesses or conditions that may interfere with the recovery process.
- You are a non-smoker.
- You have realistic body image expectations.
How Liposuction Is Performed
Liposuction may be performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. In many cases, local anesthesia is used. Depending on your medical history, your surgeon’s technique, and the amount of tissue to be removed, your surgeon may recommend either local or general anesthesia. Talk to your surgeon for more information.
During the procedure, the surgeon injects a liquid solution (known as a wetting solution) into the area to be treated. This solution consists of saline, a local anesthetic, a solution to reduce bleeding, and epinephrine, which temporarily shrinks the blood vessels, limiting blood loss during the procedure.
Once this solution has been injected, the surgeon inserts a cannula (a thin tube). The cannula is attached to a vacuum device. The cannula is moved back and forth beneath the skin, loosening and suctioning out excess fat. Once the fat has been removed, the small incision site is closed up. Over time, the skin’s natural elasticity causes it to contract, giving the treated area a firm, toned appearance.
Your Options: Liposuction in Mesa, AZ
There are several types of liposuction, including tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (with pulse lasers). In tumescent liposuction, much more wetting solution is injected than volume of fat removed. As a result, the fat swells, which makes it easier to remove with less bleeding and bruising. Other techniques may be used for your Mesa liposuction procedure with Four Peaks Plastic Surgery.
What should I do to prepare for lipoplasty?
The medical staff at Four Peaks Plastic Surgery will provide you with all the information you need to prepare for your lipoplasty procedure. As with any cosmetic surgery, it’s important to stop smoking at least two weeks before the procedure and to avoid non-prescribed supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs. Dr. Faibisoff will give you detailed information about preparing for liposuction at your pre-op appointment.
What is the recovery process like?
Immediately following your procedure, some swelling and bruising is normal. It is likely that you will be told to wear a compression garment around the operative area. This compression garment helps manage swelling and keeps your skin tight against the treated area. It is important to follow all post-operative guidelines recommended by your health care team at Four Peaks Plastic Surgery. This will help ensure the best possible outcome for your procedure.
How long will the results last?
The results of liposuction can last a lifetime when you follow your surgeon’s recovery guidelines, maintain your weight, and live a healthy lifestyle.
