How Long Do Breast Lift Results Last?

Author: Burt Faibisoff, M.D., FRCS (C)

For many women, breast lift surgery is something you don’t want do more than once. That being the case, you want to make sure your breast lift results last. While the results don’t have a determined lifespan, there are a few things you can do to make sure your breast lift results last as long as possible.

#1 Take care of your skin.

Your skin’s elasticity is partially due to genetics. However, you do have some control. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Ask your physician about taking natural supplements to improve elasticity. Vitamin C, for example, is essential in forming collagen and cartilage. Also, some research indicates that Vitamin E may help improve elasticity.

#2 Always wear a bra.

Going bra-less (or wearing a bra that doesn’t fit well) will allow the breasts to sag again over time. It’s especially important to wear a bra while exercising or jogging if you want to maximize your breast lift results.

#3 Ask your surgeon about technique.

There are multiple ways to go about breast lift surgery. If your surgeon only moves the skin, then the risk of future sagging is greater. However, if your surgeon performs the breast lift surgery by reconstructing some tissue as well, then it’s more likely your breast lift results will last longer.

#4 Avoid pregnancy and weight fluctuations.

Pregnancy and other weight changes negatively affect breast lift results. Avoid having this procedure until your weight has stabilized.

So, is there an answer?

I’ve known patients who have been very satisfied with their breast lift results for many, many years. Other patients may need revision breast lift surgery several years later. This largely has to do with:

  1. Quality of surgery / surgical technique.
  2. Patient goals and expectations.
  3. Diet and exercise habits.
  4. Genetic predisposition.

No matter who you see for breast lift surgery, be sure to ask the surgeon what he or she has observed with regards to the procedure’s “lifespan.” Good results with past patients does not guarantee your success. At the same time, there is no reason why you cannot achieve better results than your surgeon’s past patients (if you follow the tips above).
